Volker Bertelmann was born 11.10.1966 in a small village in the centre of Germany. He started at 9 years with classical piano lessons and when he was a little bit older he used every chance, even when he was sick, to jam with a keyboard or a synthesizer along with records. he especially liked at that time Jeff Wayne War of the Worlds. After making his first film music in the age of 18 he played in several bands, studied pop music at the music college in Hamburg and had his first record deal with Sony Music in 1994 with the band God's Favorite Dog, where he was one of the singers and rappers, besides playing keys.

Since 2001 he has released records with his bands Music AM, Tonetraeger and with his solo piano project Hauschka. Since Hauschka there have already been three albums, which show the musical progress towards a new way of dealing with traditional piano music in connection with modern experimental and pop music. In 2007 he released his first record on the British label Fat Cat. Another album is on its way, which is a remix album of 'the prepared piano' with vocal versions of different artists such as Tarwater, Barbara Morgenstern and Nobokatsu Takemura.
